matanicola is a creative duo project founded in 2005 by the israeli choreographers and performers matan zamir and the Italian choreographer and performer nicola mascia.
matan zamir was born in 1977 in israel . he studied firstly in in the kibbutz contemporary dance school, and later in bat dor dance school. in 1996 he joined the batsheva ensemble where he worked with several choreographers such as noa dar, itsik galili, lara barsaq, ohad naharin, joaquin sabate, linda gaudreau, frederic lascour and performed in works of anjelin perljocaj and jiri kilien amongst others. worked as well with omri nitsan, itsik weingertain, avshalom polak, yasmeen godder, inbal pinto, amit goldenberg/yaara dolev and rami beer.
matan moved to berlin in 2002 and since that time worked with sasha waltz, benoit lachambre, junko woda, hanayo, alexand liane and sharon paz.
nicola mascia was born in 1975 in torino, Italy and started to dance in 1985. in italy he worked with the choreographers claudia bruni, massimo lianti and the company amadossalto, he was as well trained at the joe tremaine dance center in la. in 1996 he moved to berlin to work with sasha waltz & guests. over the next eight years was involved in the creation of “alee der kosmonauten”, “zweiland”, “na zemlye”, “dialogue 99/1 & 2”, “korper”, “s”, 17-25/4 (dialogue 2002)“, ”no body”, “insidout”, “dialogue 04-palast der republik”, and in several of sasha’s improvisation projects. during that time worked as well with emio greco/pc, benoit lachambre, constanza macras, junko woda, hanayo, alexand liane, takako suzuki, yuko kaseki, christina poulhofer and sharon paz. in 2003 he won the “award for best onscreen performance” at the 13th moving picture festival of dance on film & video, toronto 2004, for participating in “elements of mine” directed by norbert servos and khaled el-hagar. his own works includes “no more cookies for you, sir!”, a video installation created in collaboration with sampson zaharkiv presented in schaubuhne am lihniner platz, berlin.
